Micro-surfacing

Description
Micro-surfacing is a mixture of polymer modified asphalt emulsion, mineral aggregate, mineral filler, water, and other additives, properly proportioned, mixed and spread on a paved surface in accordance with a specification.

The mix is capable of being spread in variably thick cross sections (wedges, ruts, scratch courses and surfaces) which, after curing and initial traffic consolidation, resists compaction throughout the entire design tolerance range of bitumen content and variable thicknesses to be encountered. The end product maintains a friction resistance surface (high wet friction co-efficient) in variably thick sections throughout the service life of the Micro-Surfacing.

The mix is a quick set, quick traffic system, meaning that is will be able to accept traffic after a short period of time. These systems have been required to accept rolling traffic on a one-half (1/2) inch (12.7mm) thick surface within one hour after placement in +75°F (24°C) temperature and 50% humidity.

Uses for Micro-surfacing

  • Preventive maintenance overlay used to waterproof and protect a structurally sound pavement.
  • Micro-surfacing can be used to provide a skid resistant surface course on a structurally sound pavement. Placed as either a one course or two course application, dependant on pavement condition and traffic type.
  • Another primary use for micro-surfacing is rutfilling pavement areas showing rutting. It can be used to fill ruts up to 2 inches in depth. When ruts are over an average of 3/8 inch in depth, a "rut box" should be specified which can be controlled to precisely fill the rut. This work is normally paid for by the ton of material placed.
  • Can be used as a two-step procedure to overlay slick, bleeding surfaces. First course is put down with low binder content, second course with normal binder content. Usually a total of 30 pounds in the two applications.
  • Micro-surfacing can be used to fill spalled joints in asphalt concrete pavements. Joints need to be cleaned of all loose material and filled with micro-surfacing material, opened to traffic, and then refilled. The material will flow into the joint and spalls prior to its rapid set.
  • Can be used over widened areas of pavement, intersections, or where new line delineation is required.
